Artist's Comments

I discovered a great new way to make masks! Yay me! This piece was entirely hand sculpted and painted by me. The mask is composed of a "crafter's porcelain" which isn't porcelain at all, but rather a sort of polymer. The face is rigid but durable, and I would estimate it to be somewhat lighter than a twin made out of clay. The paint is acrylic, with a thorough dusting of metalic powders to bring out iridescence and the metalic gold color. The face is sprayed with a glossy glaze to protect it and give it a lovely sheen. And, of course, I inserted all those lovely peacock feathers and added an iridescent red rhinestone in the forhead. It's entirely wearable.

Oh wow. That looks really amazing. Did you make a mold for the feathers or did you sculpt them all individually?

:iconnamingway:
Well, since they're all different sizes, I sculpted each one individiually. =D It took ages.

Wow that is amazing! The detail in that! Can we get an up close detail shot? It's so realistic and cool. Wish I had 200.....*sigh* also maybe more on how this was done...Might try my hand at it....

I almost included a close up shot, but my camera was taking lousey pictures at that pingt with artificial light. I might try now that there's some natural sunlight coming in from outside.

What more do you want to know about the process?

The stuff I use is literally called 'Crafter's Porcelain" and it comes in a small resealable tub. I've found it at most big craft stores- Michaels or Hobby Lobby, over with the mold making/sculpting section. Working it is fairly self evident- you use it like you would clay, and it air dries hard into a durable tranclucent material not unlike plastic. It's must more durable than polymer clay, though polymer clay is probably better for miniatures and figurines. Of course, I'd rather use sculpting epoxy for that anyhow.
